Sometimes, yes. Parts from different ranges or generations can work together, but a shared brand name or the same number of sprockets does not prove it. Compatibility depends on the exact component families and the whole installed system, from shifters to frame. Check each connection, confirm it against the manufacturer's documentation for the exact parts, and have the bike assessed before anything is ordered.
Why brand and speed count are not the whole answer
It is tempting to assume that two parts from the same brand with the same speed count will work together. In practice, manufacturers have changed cable pull, derailleur design, chain specifications, freehub standards and brake systems between families and generations. Shimano publishes separate official compatibility charts for the rear drivetrain, front drivetrain and freehub and cassette fit, and SRAM maintains its own compatibility map. Compatibility is a set of individual pairings, and every one has to pass.

Shifter and rear derailleur
This pairing catches many people out. A mechanical shifter pulls a set amount of cable per click, and the derailleur must be designed for exactly that. An electronic shifter must belong to the same system as the derailleur. Parts with the same speed count can still be mismatched, so check the documented pairing for your exact model codes.
Cassette and freehub
The cassette must fit the freehub body on your rear wheel. Spline patterns and body lengths differ, and some wider-range cassettes need a specific freehub. If they do not match, the wheel may need a different freehub body, or may not accept a suitable one.
Chain and sprocket count
Chain width and design follow the sprocket count and, in some systems, the specific family. A chain that fits physically may still shift poorly or sit outside the manufacturer's stated pairing.
Crankset and front derailleur
Where a front derailleur is fitted, it must suit the chainring sizes, chainline and shifter. The crank spindle and bottom bracket also need to match the frame.
Brake levers and calipers
On many road and gravel bikes the shifter and brake lever are one unit, so changing shifters can mean changing brakes. Mixing generations can mean mixing hydraulic systems, and some brake fluids must never be combined. Rim or disc, and mechanical or hydraulic, are separate decisions.
Frame mounts, routing and clearance
The frame decides a lot: the derailleur hanger, front derailleur mount, internal or external routing, and room for larger sprockets, chainrings and chain across the full gear range.
Mechanical versus electronic
Electronic systems add batteries, charging, wiring or wireless pairing, and firmware. Mechanical and electronic shifting parts are usually not interchangeable, and electronic parts from different families may not communicate.

When documents or an inspection are needed
Photos and model codes narrow the question, but they do not always settle it. Some combinations can only be confirmed against the manufacturer's current documentation for the exact parts. Others depend on things a photo cannot show, such as hanger condition, freehub condition, internal routing, bottom bracket fit or clearance at the ends of the gear range. Then a physical inspection is the honest next step, and a proposal may turn out to need more parts, or a different approach.
