Why Most E-Bikes Get Poor Servicing
Most bike shops either won't touch e-bikes or treat them like standard bikes. Neither approach is good enough. E-bikes have specific servicing requirements that standard bikes don't: and they're increasingly common in South London.
What's Different About E-Bike Servicing
E-bikes weigh more, produce more torque at the drivetrain, and generate more heat from braking. The components wear differently as a result. The motor and battery system requires specific diagnostics to check. You can't just look at a Bosch or Shimano STEPS motor and know if it's operating correctly: you need the diagnostic software or hardware to read the system health.
Motor System Servicing
Bosch, Shimano STEPS, Fazua, and Yamaha motor systems each have their own diagnostic tools. We work with all of them. The motor unit itself doesn't need regular servicing: it's sealed: but the connections, the battery contacts, and the charging port should be checked and cleaned periodically.
Drivetrain Wear
E-bike drivetrains wear faster than standard bikes. The torque output means chains load harder, cassettes wear faster, chainrings deform more quickly. If you're riding an e-bike with a standard service interval, you'll wear out components 30-50% faster than a non-assisted cyclist. Our recommendation: check chain every 1,000 miles on an e-bike, not every 2,000. The extra cost of more frequent chain replacement is significantly less than the cost of a worn cassette and chainring.
Brake Servicing
On an e-bike, brakes work harder and wear faster. The rotor surfaces degrade faster from the heat of consistent heavier braking. We check rotor thickness on e-bikes more carefully: the minimum thickness is reached faster than on a standard road bike. Recommended brake check interval for e-bikes: every 6 months, or every 2,000km, whichever comes first.

Book a Service →What makes e-bike servicing different
An e-bike is still a bicycle, but the motor system adds load and complexity. The drivetrain often wears faster because the motor adds torque through the chain, cassette and chainrings. The bike is usually heavier, so brakes, tyres and wheels work harder too. A normal safety check is still needed, but the service must consider the electrical system and the extra forces on the bike.
At Bike Clinique we focus e-bike work around proven systems such as Shimano and Bosch. We check the mechanical condition first: brakes, tyres, wheels, drivetrain, bearings and frame hardware. Then the motor-related symptoms can be considered sensibly.
Extra e-bike checks
- Chain and cassette wear under motor load.
- Brake pad and rotor condition.
- Tyre casing strength and pressure.
- Wheel spokes and hub condition.
- Battery seating, wiring condition and error symptoms.
If an e-bike feels noisy, skips under power or brakes poorly, do not ignore it. The repair cost usually rises if drivetrain or brake wear is left too long.
How Bike Clinique would approach it
Our workshop process is diagnosis first. We check the bike in the stand, separate urgent safety work from optional upgrades, then explain what is worth doing before parts are ordered. That means brakes, steering, tyres and wheel security first, then drivetrain wear, bearings, cables and setup. The result should be a bike that is safer, quieter and more predictable on real South West London roads.
If you are unsure which route is right, send clear photos or bring the bike to Unit 1, The Swan Centre, Rosemary Road, SW17 0AR. We can tell you whether the sensible answer is a small adjustment, a service, replacement parts or a properly planned upgrade.
When to book the bike in
Book the bike in when the fault affects safety, reliability or confidence. Brakes that feel weak, gears that skip under load, tyres with cuts, steering play, creaks from the bottom bracket area or a drivetrain that stays noisy after cleaning are all signs that the bike needs a workshop check rather than another quick adjustment at home.
For riders around Wimbledon, SW17 and South West London, the most common pattern is simple: the bike feels fine until it is used more often, ridden in bad weather or pushed on a longer route. That is when hidden wear shows up. A short inspection can prevent a chain from damaging a cassette, a brake fault from becoming dangerous, or a small bearing issue from turning into a bigger repair.
Bike Clinique works from diagnosis first. We check the issue, explain what is urgent, quote the parts and labour before fitting, and keep the recommendation practical for the bike and the way it is ridden.
