Master Service vs Full Service: Which Does Your Bike Actually Need?

Master Service vs Full Service: Which Does Your Bike Actually Need?

Most cyclists don't know the difference. And it's costing them money.

Not because shops are hiding anything: usually the opposite. The names are vague, the descriptions are full of jargon, and by the time you hand over your bike you've got no idea what you're actually paying for.

At BikeClinique, we think you should know exactly what you're getting. So let's clear it up.

What a Full Service Includes (£120)

This is our standard full-service package. For most riders, this covers everything that needs doing on a regular basis:

  • Gear cables replaced: old cables stretch and snap at the worst times
  • Brake cables replaced: same deal, stretched cables mean mushy brakes
  • Brake blocks inspected and replaced if worn
  • Gear indexing adjusted: so your gears actually shift cleanly
  • Chain wear checked: we measure it and tell you if it's gone
  • Chain lubricated
  • Tyres inspected for wear and embedded debris
  • Frame bolts checked for security
  • Wheel truing: minor adjustments to get your wheels running straight
  • Bottom bracket checked for play
  • Headset checked for play
  • Full bike clean: degrease, rinse, re-lube
  • 30-day warranty on all parts and labour

This is the service most bikes need once a year, or every 1,500 to 2,000 km.

What a Master Service Includes (£220)

Everything in the Full Service, plus:

  • Full strip-down of the bottom bracket, headset, and hubs
  • All bearings cleaned, inspected, and repacked with fresh grease
  • Headset replaced if worn (or cleaned and repacked if fine)
  • Bottom bracket bearings replaced if worn
  • Hub bearings adjusted to factory spec
  • Fork stanchions inspected for scoring or damage
  • Handlebar tape or grips replaced
  • Frame inspected for cracks, corrosion, or damage
  • Rear mech and front mech servicing: full clean and lubrication of pivots
  • Crankset removed and checked for damage
  • Seat post cleaned and grease applied: prevents seizing
  • Pedals serviced: cleaned and re-greased
  • 60-day warranty on all parts and labour

If your bike is older, you've had it a while, or it's been ridden hard and put away wet: this is the one.

The short version: a Full Service keeps things running. A Master Service restores things to as-new condition inside and out.

How to Know Which One You Need

Choose the Full Service if:

  • Your bike is less than two years old
  • You ride recreationally, a few times a week
  • You've had it serviced in the last 12 months
  • Nothing feels obviously wrong: you just want it checked over

Choose the Master Service if:

  • Your bike is three years old or more
  • You've never had a full strip-down
  • You ride daily or commute in all weathers
  • You can feel roughness in the hubs, headset, or bottom bracket
  • Your gears never quite shift right no matter how many times you adjust them
  • You bought it second-hand and don't know its service history
  • There are clicks, creaks, or grinding sounds when you ride

If you're not sure, book a Full Service and ask us to check the bearings. We'll tell you honestly whether a Master Service is warranted: and we won't upsell you if it isn't.

Warning Signs You Need Service Now

Don't wait for your next scheduled service if you're seeing any of these:

  • Squeaking or grinding from the bottom bracket, headset, or hubs
  • Play in the wheels: you can feel the axle shifting side to side
  • Brakes that don't stop you: lever pulls all the way to the bar
  • Gears that jump or skip under load
  • A clicking chain: especially under pressure
  • Visible rust on the chain or cassette: surface rust spreads fast
  • Cracks in the frame: particularly around weld points and the head tube
  • A headset that knocks when you brake hard
  • Your wheel touches the brake blocks when it shouldn't

Any of these are safety issues. Get them sorted before your next ride.

Ready to Book?

If your bike is due a service, or if something doesn't feel right: don't ignore it.

BikeClinique has been in Wimbledon for 14 years. Master-certified mechanic, 4.9-star Google rating. We collect bikes from anywhere in SW London and return them clean and ready to ride.

When to book the bike in

Book the bike in when the fault affects safety, reliability or confidence. Brakes that feel weak, gears that skip under load, tyres with cuts, steering play, creaks from the bottom bracket area or a drivetrain that stays noisy after cleaning are all signs that the bike needs a workshop check rather than another quick adjustment at home.

For riders around Wimbledon, SW17 and South West London, the most common pattern is simple: the bike feels fine until it is used more often, ridden in bad weather or pushed on a longer route. That is when hidden wear shows up. A short inspection can prevent a chain from damaging a cassette, a brake fault from becoming dangerous, or a small bearing issue from turning into a bigger repair.

Bike Clinique works from diagnosis first. We check the issue, explain what is urgent, quote the parts and labour before fitting, and keep the recommendation practical for the bike and the way it is ridden.
