Can You Reuse Your Wheels on a New Custom Bike Frame?

Reusing your existing wheels on a new custom frame is possible, but only if the wheels and the frame are checked together as one system. Axle type, brake type, rotor interface, freehub, wheel size and frame clearance all need to line up before a transfer makes sense. This guide walks through what to check before you assume a wheelset will carry over.

Why wheel transfer is not a simple yes or no

A wheel that worked perfectly on your old bike was matched to that frame's axle standard, brake type, gearing and tyre clearance. A new frame, especially a custom build, may use a different axle spacing, a different brake mount or a wider tyre allowance. None of that means your wheels are wasted. It means they need a proper check before they go back on a bike.

Axle type and spacing

Quick-release and thru-axle wheels are not interchangeable without changing hubs or dropouts. Road thru-axles are commonly 12x100mm front and 12x142mm rear, but older quick-release hubs use 9x100mm front and 10x130mm or 135mm rear. Boost spacing on some gravel and mountain frames adds another variant. Measure the axle diameter and hub spacing on your existing wheels and compare them against the new frame's specification before assuming a fit.

Rim brakes versus disc brakes

Rim brake wheels and disc brake wheels are built differently and are not interchangeable between frame types. A rim brake wheel has a braking surface machined into the rim and usually no rotor mount. A disc brake wheel needs a rotor mount and a frame or fork built for a disc caliper. If your old bike used rim brakes and your new frame is disc-only, the wheels cannot transfer as they are.

Rotor interface and size

For disc-equipped wheels, the rotor mounting standard matters as much as the axle. Six-bolt and Center Lock hubs are not directly interchangeable without an adaptor, and the new frame's caliper mounts need to suit your rotor size. Check rotor diameter against what the new frame and fork are set up to run, and confirm the mount type before fitting.

Freehub and cassette fit

Your cassette needs a freehub body that matches both the wheel and the new groupset. Shimano/SRAM HG freehubs, Microspline and SRAM XDR bodies are not interchangeable, and moving to a wider-range cassette can require a freehub swap even if the wheel itself is otherwise fine. If your new build changes drivetrain brand or gearing range, treat the freehub as part of the compatibility check, not an afterthought.

Wheel diameter and tyre clearance

700c and 650b wheels are not interchangeable, and even within 700c, tyre width and frame clearance vary between frames. A wheel and tyre combination that cleared your old frame comfortably may not clear a new frame with tighter chainstays or a different fork, particularly with mudguards or wider tyres fitted.

Dish, alignment and condition

Respacing a wheel for a different axle width changes the dish, and rim, spoke and bearing condition all affect whether adapting a wheel is worthwhile. A wheel with worn bearings, a tired rim or heavily worn spoke tension is a poor candidate for redishing, even if the axle standard can technically be adapted.

Your wheel-transfer compatibility checklist

  • Axle type and diameter (quick-release, thru-axle, spacing)
  • Rim brake or disc brake, and whether the new frame matches
  • Rotor interface (six-bolt or Center Lock) and rotor size
  • Freehub body type against the new groupset
  • Wheel diameter (700c or 650b) and tyre clearance on the new frame
  • Dish and alignment after any respacing
  • Rim, spoke and bearing condition
  • Whether adapting the wheel is worth it compared with a new wheelset

What to bring for a wheel-transfer check

Bring the wheels themselves, along with the new frame or complete new bike if you have it, or clear photos and the frame's spec sheet if the frame is still being sourced. Bring your current cassette and any spare adaptors you own. If you know the axle standard, rotor size and tyre width you are working with, bring that information too. It speeds up the check and gives a clearer answer on what will transfer directly, what needs adapting, and what is better replaced.
