Custom Bike Build FAQ — London | BikeClinique
Custom Bike Builds in London — Expert Answers
We build more custom bikes in South West London than anyone. Here are the answers to the questions we hear most from riders considering a custom build.
How much does a custom bike build cost in London?
A custom bike build in London starts from £1,000 for the build alone, excluding the frame. A complete custom bike — frame, groupset, wheels, and build — typically starts from £2,500 and can go to £8,000+ depending on specification. We spec every build around the rider's budget, goals, and geometry requirements.
How long does a custom bike build take?
From order to ready-to-ride typically 4–10 weeks. The frame choice, groupset availability, and wheel build time are the main variables. We give you a clear timeline before you commit and update you at every stage.
What is the process for a custom bike build at BikeClinique?
Step 1: Consultation — we discuss your riding, goals, budget, and preferred fit. Step 2: We spec the frame, groupset, and components. Step 3: You approve the quote. Step 4: We order everything and build. Step 5: Full quality check, fit verification, and road test. Step 6: Handover.
Can you build a bike around a frame I already own?
Yes. If you have a frame already, we can spec and build the complete bike around it. We'll check the frame's bottom bracket standard, seatpost diameter, headset type, and brake mount to make sure everything is compatible before you spend a penny.
What brands of frame do you work with?
We work with all major frame brands — Specialized, Trek, Canyon, Bianchi, Merida, Giant, and premium brands including Colnago, Pinarello, Wilier, and Look. We also build with custom steel and titanium frames from specialist builders.
Is a custom bike worth the extra cost over a complete bike?
Yes — for the right rider. A custom bike is worth it if you want a frame sized and geometry'd specifically for your body and riding position, if you're building toward a specific purpose (racing, endurance, gravel), or if you want components chosen for your goals rather than what came in a box. If you're an occasional rider, a complete bike from a good brand is usually fine.
Do you offer bike fitting with a custom build?
Yes. Every custom build starts with a fit consultation. We measure your geometry, riding position, flexibility, and goals — then choose the right frame size, stem length, handlebar width, and crank length to match. A good fit is what makes a custom bike actually better than an off-the-peg bike.
Can I spread the cost of a custom bike build?
We can discuss payment terms for high-value builds over £3,000. We also work with the Cycle to Work scheme which can cover the full cost of a bike and components through your employer. Ask us about this when you enquire.
What warranty do I get on a custom build?
Manufacturer warranties apply to all component parts (frames, groupsets, wheels). Our build labour is guaranteed for 12 months — if anything we built fails due to our workmanship, we fix it at no charge. This doesn't cover wear items like chains, brake pads, and tyres.
How do I start the process of building a custom bike?
Book a free consultation through our bookings page or call 07951 125843. We'll ask about your riding, your current bike, your budget, and what you want to achieve. From that conversation we can give you a detailed spec and quote with no commitment.
