Quick answers: the questions London riders ask most about custom bike builds
How much does a custom bike build cost in London?
A custom bike build at BikeClinique starts from £600 for labour on the build itself (frame and components supplied separately). The all-in cost of a complete custom build — frame, groupset, wheels, finishing kit, and the build labour — typically lands between £3,500 and £9,000 depending on the spec. A custom gravel build at the entry tier can be done for around £2,800 all-in. A flagship road build with Dura-Ace Di2 and high-end carbon wheels will push £10,000. All prices are labour only; frames and parts are quoted separately and only fitted with your approval. The full cost breakdown is in Custom Bike Build London — Complete Guide 2026.
Is a custom bike build worth it vs buying off-the-peg?
Yes, if you have a specific fit, aesthetic, or use-case an off-the-peg bike can't serve. No, if you just want a great bike and the off-the-peg options at your size work. The honest rule of thumb: a £4,000 custom build will ride like a £5,500-6,000 off-the-peg bike in terms of pure component spec, but the fit, ride quality, and longevity are unbeatable. The deeper comparison is in Custom Bike Build vs Off-the-Shelf: What's Actually Worth It for London Cyclists? and the cost-focused version in Custom Build or Off-the-Peg? The Real Cost Comparison London Riders Need To See.
How long does a custom bike build take?
From first conversation to first ride: 6-12 weeks. Most of that is frame lead time (stock frames 2-3 weeks, custom-painted steel 8-12 weeks). Once the frame is in, the build itself takes 1-2 weeks including cable routing, Di2 wiring, wheel building, and final setup. We never rush a build. The full timeline is in The Custom Bike Build Process at BikeClinique — What to Expect.
Do you do a bike fit before a custom build?
Always. We will not spec a frame or order components without a proper bike fit first. The bike fit tells us your effective top tube, stack, reach, saddle position, and cleat setup — every dimension the frame needs to match. Cutting the fit step is the single biggest mistake riders make when commissioning a custom build, and it's why so many "custom" bikes don't ride right. The full argument is in The BikeFit Before The Build — Why We Won't Build Without Knowing Your Dimensions.
Can I bring my own frame for a custom build?
Yes, and it's a great way to do it. If you've already got a frame, we can build it up with your chosen groupset, wheels, finishing kit, and accessories. Build labour starts from £600 depending on routing complexity, electronic wiring, and how much finishing work the frame needs. We can also source the frame for you if you'd rather spec it from scratch — we work with steel, titanium, carbon, and aluminium builders and have trade accounts across the UK.
The custom build process at BikeClinique
Every custom build at BikeClinique follows the same process. The depth of work at each stage depends on whether you're bringing a frame or commissioning one from scratch, but the steps are consistent.
- Bike fit and rider assessment — a full professional bike fit establishes the geometry we need to build to. We use your existing bike, your goals, and your riding history to spec the frame, contact points, and fit offsets. This step is non-negotiable.
- Frame material and builder selection — we talk through carbon, aluminium, steel and titanium, the tradeoffs in ride feel, longevity, cost, and repairability, and recommend builders that match your brief. For steel we work with a small set of UK framebuilders; for carbon we have relationships with the major and boutique brands. The full frame-material guide is below.
- Component specification — groupset (Shimano 105 Di2, Ultegra Di2, Dura-Ace Di2, SRAM Rival/Force/Red AXS), wheels, finishing kit (handlebar, stem, seatpost, saddle), tyres, and accessories. We spec from your riding, your goals, and your budget — not from what's in stock.
- Quotation and approval — full written quote with parts and labour broken out separately, lead times, payment schedule. We never start work without your written approval.
- Build and assembly — headset and bottom bracket installation, drivetrain assembly, electronic wiring (Di2/AXS), cable/hose routing, wheel building if needed, finishing kit installation, torque to spec on every bolt.
- Setup, ride test, handover — final bike-fit adjustment, ride test on the road, handover with full documentation, and a 12-month workmanship guarantee.

Custom vs off-the-peg: when each makes sense
The right answer depends on what kind of rider you are. Here's the honest framework we use when customers come in for a consult.
| Rider type | Custom build? | Off-the-peg? |
|---|---|---|
| First-time bike buyer, casual rider | No | Yes — a quality hybrid or entry road bike is the right call |
| Club rider, fits a stock size, wants performance | No, unless you want a specific build spec | Yes — a flagship off-the-peg will outperform a basic custom |
| Rider between sizes, or with specific fit needs | Yes — this is the textbook reason for a custom build | Not ideal — you'll be compromising on stack, reach, or both |
| Rider with a specific use case (audax, randonneur, ultra-endurance, expedition) | Yes — off-the-peg rarely serves niche use cases well | No |
| Rider who wants a specific frame material (steel, titanium, bespoke carbon) | Yes — this is the only way | No |
| Rider who wants a specific groupset/wheel/finishing combination | Possibly — a custom build is the easiest way to get the exact spec | Yes if a stock build matches the spec |
| Rider on a strict budget | No | Yes — a 2-3 year old off-the-peg can be exceptional value |
| Rider who values the ownership experience and the story of the bike | Yes | No |

Custom builds by riding discipline
We build custom bikes for every discipline of cycling. The materials, geometry, and component choices change with the use case — a custom road race bike and a custom gravel bike share almost nothing in spec.
Custom road bikes
Race geometry, fast handling, lightweight. Carbon frames from the major brands, custom-painted steel and titanium for the heritage build. Spec typically Ultegra Di2 or Dura-Ace Di2, deep-section carbon wheels, integrated cockpits. The flagship builds come in around £7,000-£10,000 all-in.
Custom gravel bikes
The biggest growth area in custom builds. Gravel geometry is more relaxed than road, with clearance for 45-50mm tyres, multiple bottle mounts, and often a 1x or 2x drivetrain. We build gravel bikes around Shimano GRX Di2 or SRAM Rival/Force AXS with wide-range cassettes. The full guide is in Building A Custom Gravel Bike — What We Actually Consider That Off-The-Peg Misses.
Custom mountain bikes
Hardtail, full-suspension, downcountry, trail, enduro. We spec around your local terrain and your riding style, with suspension tuning as a separate service after the build. The two deep dives are Why Choose a Custom Mountain Bike Through Expert Custom Bike Builds and Why a Custom Mountain Bike is Worth the Investment.
Custom commuter, tour, and randonneur bikes
Steel is the right material for most of these. Custom-painted steel frames from UK framebuilders, built up with porteur racks, dynamo lighting, mudguards, and a Brooks or similar leather saddle. The result is a bike that will outlive you.
Spec'ing the groupset? Start here.
If a new electronic groupset (Di2, AXS) is part of the build, our Di2 & Electronic Groupset Hub covers the install, programming, costs, and reviews of every Shimano Di2 and SRAM AXS groupset. Worth reading alongside this hub before you commit to a spec.
Frame materials: the honest comparison
The frame material is the single biggest decision in a custom build, and the answer is rarely "carbon always." Here's the honest guide.
- Steel — the classic custom frame material. Forgiving ride quality, easy to repair, can be custom-painted. Heavier than carbon or aluminium, but the longevity is unmatched. The right choice for tour, commuter, randonneur, and most heritage road builds.
- Titanium — the premium alternative to steel. Lighter than steel, won't corrode, similar ride quality to high-end steel. More expensive, harder to repair, longer lead times. The right choice for a "buy once, ride for life" road or gravel build.
- Carbon — the performance material. Stiff, light, can be moulded into any shape. Doesn't dent visibly when damaged (a real safety concern), harder to repair, and the cheapest carbon frames now compete on price with quality steel. The right choice for race, performance road, and high-end gravel.
- Aluminium — the budget material. Light, stiff, cheap. The ride quality is improving but still below the others. The right choice when weight and budget are the only constraints.
What we actually do at BikeClinique
We're a South London workshop that designs and builds custom bikes every month. We do the bike fit, we spec the frame and the components, we source at trade prices, and we build the bike properly in the workshop. We work with steel, titanium, carbon and aluminium frame builders across the UK and Europe. Build labour starts from £600 and the all-in cost depends on the spec you want.

Frequently asked questions about custom bike builds in London
How long does a custom build take at BikeClinique?
From first conversation to first ride: 6-12 weeks. The bulk of the time is frame lead time — a stock frame is 2-3 weeks, a custom-painted steel frame is 8-12 weeks, titanium is 10-16 weeks. Once the frame is in, the build takes 1-2 weeks. We never rush a build and we never start one without a complete spec and your written approval.
Do I need a bike fit before commissioning a custom build?
Yes, always. The bike fit is what tells us the frame geometry, contact point positions, and component dimensions the build needs to match. Cutting the fit step is the most common mistake riders make with custom builds, and it's why some "custom" bikes don't ride right. A professional bike fit is a separate service at BikeClinique and is the foundation of any build we do.
Can I supply my own frame?
Yes, this is a great way to do a custom build. If you've already got the frame — new from a framebuilder, second-hand, or something you've been saving — we can build it up with the groupset, wheels, and finishing kit of your choice. Build labour starts from £600 for a straightforward build, more for complex electronic wiring, internal routing, or unusual frame standards.
Do you work with my framebuilder of choice?
If they're reputable and the lead time works for your timeline, yes. We work with several UK and European framebuilders as default choices, but we're happy to build a frame from any reputable builder. If you don't have a framebuilder in mind, we can recommend one based on your brief, budget, and timeline.
What groupsets do you fit?
Shimano 105 Di2, Ultegra Di2, Dura-Ace Di2, GRX Di2, XT Di2, XTR Di2, and the equivalent SRAM groupsets (Rival, Force, Red, NX, GX, X01, XX1 — all AXS where applicable). We also fit Campagnolo on request. Mechanical groupsets are still available on some builds. The full groupset guide is in our Di2 & Electronic Groupset Hub.
Can you source the parts at trade prices?
Yes. We have trade accounts with Shimano, SRAM, Campagnolo, Zipp, ENVE, Hunt, Continental, Schwalbe, and most of the major UK distributors. Sourcing through us usually beats high-street pricing and saves you the hassle of chasing parts from multiple suppliers. The labour and the parts are quoted separately so you see exactly what you're paying for.
What warranty do you offer on a custom build?
Every BikeClinique build comes with a 12-month workmanship guarantee. If a bolt comes loose, a cable frays where it shouldn't, a wheel goes out of true, or any other build-quality issue appears in the first year, we fix it free of charge. Frame warranties are handled by the frame manufacturer — typically 5 years to lifetime for steel, titanium, and premium carbon.
Can I see examples of bikes you've built?
Yes — the Dream Bike Build page has case studies of recent builds, the spec sheets, the build costs, and the customer's own notes. If you'd like to see a particular kind of build in person, get in touch and we'll arrange a viewing at the workshop.
Ready to start?
The first step is a conversation. Tell us what you ride, what you want the bike to do, and what your budget looks like. We'll come back with a recommendation: frame, material, groupset, wheels, finishing kit, lead time, and a complete written quote. No pressure, no hard sell, just an honest recommendation from a working South London workshop.
