Di2 & Electronic Groupset Hub: London Install, Reviews & Upgrade Advice

Di2 & Electronic Groupset Hub: London Install, Reviews & Upgrade Advice

Electronic shifting is no longer a luxury. Di2, eTap AXS and the new wireless generations have made it the default choice for any serious road, gravel or MTB rider in London. This is the master hub for everything we've written about electronic groupsets — installs, reviews, comparisons, costs and honest advice from a working South London workshop.

Quick answers: the questions London riders ask us most about electronic groupsets

How much does it cost to install Di2 in London?

At BikeClinique, a Shimano Di2 install starts from £200 for the labour on a like-for-like upgrade with no compatibility headaches. A full frame-and-groupset build (we source the groupset, you source the frame, or vice versa) is quoted per project but typically lands between £350 and £600 for labour depending on routing complexity, battery placement and whether internal frame routing is clean. All prices are labour only. Parts — shifters, derailleurs, batteries, chargers, cables — are quoted separately and only fitted with your approval. Is electronic shifting really better than mechanical?

Yes, for almost every rider. Shifts are faster, more consistent, and the trim adjustments are automatic. On a wet London commute, mechanical shifters get sluggish as the cables swell; Di2 and AXS perform identically in the dry and the rain. The only argument for mechanical now is budget and the feel of a classic build. Read the full comparison in Di2 vs Mechanical Shifting: Is Electronic Worth the Upgrade?.

Should I buy 105 Di2 or Ultegra Di2?

For 90% of riders, 105 Di2 12-speed is the right call. The shift feel is now functionally identical to Ultegra Di2 — you give up carbon levers and a few grams of weight, nothing that matters on a London ride. Save the £600+ and put it towards better wheels. We break the maths down in Shimano 105 Di2 vs Ultegra Di2: Which Should You Buy?.

SRAM AXS or Shimano Di2?

Both are excellent. AXS is more elegant — wireless, single-button shift logic, easy to mix road and mountain parts on one bike. Di2 is more polished — wired (or wireless on the new 12-speed road groups), faster shifting, broader service network. Honestly, you can't go wrong with either. Should you upgrade your groupset or buy a new bike?

This is the question we get most often. The honest answer: if your frame fits, your wheels are good, your cockpit is right — upgrade. A new Ultegra Di2 groupset is £2,000-3,000 installed. A new bike with the same groupset is £4,000-6,000. The frame and wheels you're riding today will still be the frame and wheels you want tomorrow. What we actually do at BikeClinique

We're a South London workshop that installs Di2, AXS and electronic MTB groupsets every week. We source the parts at trade prices, fit them to your bike, programme the system, bleed the brakes, set up the limit screws, torque everything to spec and hand the bike back fully tested. Install labour starts from £200 and depends on the bike and the routing. All parts are quoted separately and only fitted with your approval — we never surprise you with a bill.

Frequently asked questions about Di2 and electronic groupsets in London

How long does a Di2 install take?

A standard like-for-like Di2 upgrade — same brand, same speed, same number of gears — takes around 3-4 hours in the workshop. A full frame-and-groupset build (new cables, internal routing, battery placement, pairing and firmware update) takes a full day. We book a half-day slot for upgrades and a full-day slot for builds.

Do you programme Di2 after install?

Yes. Every Di2 install at BikeClinique includes full E-Tube Project programming — shift speed, multi-shift, button mapping, Synchro Shift on/off, and the wireless Di2 pairing on 12-speed wireless systems. We hand the bike back with a printed configuration sheet and walk you through the app.

Can I bring my own groupset for fitting?

Of course. Roughly half our installs are customer-supplied parts. We fit and programme it, the same as if we'd sourced the parts ourselves. If you want us to source the parts, we have trade accounts with Shimano, SRAM and the major UK distributors and can usually beat high-street pricing.

What if something goes wrong after the install?

Every Di2 install at BikeClinique comes with a 12-month workmanship guarantee. If a shifter stops responding, a battery won't charge, or the system throws a fault, bring it back and we'll diagnose and fix it. Electronic groupsets are reliable, but we're here if they aren't.

Do you service existing Di2 installs?

Yes. A Di2 service is a £120 labour job — we update the firmware, check the battery health, test the wiring, replace the grommets if needed, and reset the system. Worth doing every two years, or before any big ride.

Planning a custom build? Start here.

If a full groupset upgrade is part of a larger custom build project — new frame, new wheels, new everything — our Custom Bike Build London hub covers the full process, costs, materials, and framebuilder options. The Di2/AXS install is one part of the build; the hub covers the whole thing from first conversation to first ride.

Ready to upgrade?

Bring the bike in, or call 07951 125843. We'll give you an honest quote in writing, with parts and labour broken out separately, and a timeline for the work. No surprises, no upsell, just a properly installed electronic groupset on a bike that rides the way it should.
