SRAM XPLR Gravel Groupsets London

SRAM's dedicated gravel groupset platform. XPLR means one thing: this groupset was built for the mixed terrain, bad roads, and unpredictable surfaces that London riders actually face. We spec and install the full XPLR range.

SRAM XPLR Range — What We Fit

SRAM Apex XPLR — 12-speed

SRAM's entry point to dedicated gravel groupsets. 1x12 wide-range gearing (10-44t cassette = huge range, no front derailleur complexity), hydraulic disc brakes, wireless or wired options. The simplicity of 1x with the gear range of a 2x.

The wireless Apex XPLR eTap is the affordable wireless option — same shifting technology as the pro-level, just heavier. If you're coming from mechanical road, the jump to wireless is significant.

Full groupset fit from £750 (mechanical) | £1,100 (wireless eTap)

SRAM Rival XPLR — 12-speed

The mid-tier XPLR option. Lighter than Apex, same 1x wide-range architecture. Available in mechanical or wireless Rival XPLR eTap. The wireless version is the sweet spot of the XPLR range — professional-level shifting without the Force price tag.

Full groupset fit from £1,000 (mechanical) | £1,400 (wireless eTap)

SRAM Force XPLR eTap AXS — 12-speed wireless

The flagship. Full wireless AXS platform, 1x12 gearing, hydraulic disc brakes. Same technology as SRAM Red — just with slightly heavier components. The shift quality is indistinguishable from Red at a fraction of the price. Our most recommended groupset for serious gravel riders making the jump to wireless.

Full groupset fit from £1,800

Why SRAM XPLR Makes Sense for London Gravel

  • ✅ 1x simplicity — no front derailleur to mud or adjust on dirty winter rides
  • ✅ Huge gear range (10-44t) — designed for Surrey hills, not Tour de France
  • ✅ Wireless shifting (AXS models) — no cables to route through mudguards
  • ✅ AXS app integration — tweak shifting speed, sync shifts, monitor battery from your phone
  • ✅ MTB-derived derailleur cage strength — actually handles London grit and stones
  • ✅ Power meter options at every tier — Rival and Force have integrated power meter options

Common Questions

Is SRAM XPLR better than Shimano GRX?

They're different philosophies. GRX offers 2x gearing options (more gradual jumps between gears) while XPLR commits to 1x (simpler, wider range, slightly bigger jumps). For London gravel — fire paths, winter lanes, towpaths — the XPLR 1x approach is compelling. Both are excellent. It comes down to whether you want the option of a second chainring.

Can I fit XPLR to my current bike?

Most bikes with UDH (Universal Derailleur Hanger) can accept XPLR. Older bikes without UDH may need a hanger adapter. We check compatibility before quoting — no point selling you a groupset that won't fit.

What's the battery life like on wireless XPLR?

AXS batteries last roughly 20-30 hours of riding time. The derailleur battery is the one that matters — the shift lever batteries (CR2032) last months. We always recommend having a spare AXS battery for longer rides.

Is XPLR good for commuting?

It's designed for gravel but the wide-range gearing and wireless shifting make it excellent for commuters who face variable road conditions. The hydraulic brakes are significantly better than rim brakes for stop-start city riding in all weather.
